Saturday work?!
A call came in for an interview, but it was scheduled for a Saturday. I was highly skeptical. Oh no! A job that will have me work on Saturdays?!! Skeptical, I was skeptical.
Nevertheless, I went. It was near the house. I had nothing planned. No complaints. But I didn't prepare as much as other interviews. Just lipstick, didnt even wear contacts. I wasn't in the mood for a Saturday interview. But who knows, some part of me was cheering on, maybe, just maybe.
I arrived at an almost empty parking lot (sans 1 car) and a woman smoking just outside a doorway. Oh no a smoking environment. She greeted me, which was great as I have no clue in deciphering this building's entrance, and had a huge smile on her face. Great, warm reception.
She proceeded to show me around. The floorplan of the office was terrible. It was a bit dark, too (nothing can come close to the colorful office I used to work in). Oh well, I was there, just go along with it.
This woman began to talk and talk about the company and the family environment they had, how they work well together, on and on. Energy, this woman had! Whoa! She showed me their products - polycarbonate (never call it plastic) folders, envelopes, pencil holders, card holders, notebooks, you name it. The ones you would see at office supply stores in bright, bright colors. Stuff I love using. I began to take notice and listen.
She had so much energy. Who could compete? But I was able to say something about myself and my work experiences. Mostly she did the talking and the selling of the company to me. They needed someone to handle mainly one account, their biggest - Target. They needed someone to work out the details in the orders of Target. I though to myself I could do that. And on and on she went. One thing I caught was that she wasn't a micro manager, as long as the job gets done. Hallelujia! There is hope. I was feeling a little warmer toward her. I spoke my mind the rest of the time. Why not? If I dont get the job, oh well, at least I said my peace. I aired my concern for Saturday work (I dont like that after a full week's worth). Mon to Fri was the norm, she said. She agreed to the salary I asked. Oooh! Now were talking!
Next, I met the president of the company. Older man, short in stature, but I had a good vibe about him. Round face. In my conversation with him, I could feel his fatherly stance within the company. He seems like a gentle man but stern if need be. He did most of the talking, as well, selling the company and its culture to me. The only question I asked him was about his values or philosophies behind the company. Honesty, trust and communication were his answers. Good answers.
Then I sat down with both of them. Oh Lord, here we go. They said this is a first, as they ususally do not agree at the same time on their prospective employee. They offered me the job. I was stunned, probably had my jaw open for a second or two. Regaining my composure, I said that I'd like to take some time to think about it, since I didnt expect the offer. Again, throwing caution to the wind, I said, I'll pray about it. And I watched their reaction. She smiled and she said, so will I. Good, last test passed.
Today I was invited back to the office, a chance to see the office alive with people. Cozy. It was brighter with people around. One by one, they gave me a genuine smile. They also gave positive feedback about working there, that it was a great team to be working with. Mhmmm. But when each one said a different version of the same thing, there must be something positive there.
As we passed the president's office, I handed him a Thank You card. Thanking him for his time. As we ended the tour and all the introductions, I handed the woman her Thank You card. And I accepted their offer.
I will be starting my new job on the 15th as an Administrative Account Specialist.
